Federico Lorcas The menage of Bernarda Alba and Isabel Allendes The stick out of the SpiritsSociety, and its influences upon the characters, endures a pivotal portionin the development of the story in Federico Lorcas The House ofBernarda Alba and Isabel Allendes The House of the Spirits. thoughthe characters in apiece literary work were influenced by a flow ofsocietal pressures, three major influences dominate both works. TheChurch, male control condition over women, and socio-economic status (in otherwords, ones social class) are all sources of the superior societalpressures upon the characters. In order to understand why thesesocietal pressures had such a great influence upon the characters, itis important to understand the setting of each story. The House of Bernarda Alba is set in a small village in rural Spainat about the same time as the play was written, which was just beforethe Spanish Civil War. In rural Spain, handle many rural areas acrossEurope, traditional value s and social systems were overriding among thesmall villages. As a result, these rural areas, like much of Europeansociety at the time, were largely backwards in their social buildingwith class divisions still existent and society dominated by males. Also, as is quite apparent in the play, religion in the form of theCatholic Church had a huge influence over the lives of the people. The House of Bernarda Alba portrays the lives of five dollar bill sisters livingin a village in rural Spain who have been heavily repressed by thesociety that they live in. They live in a restricting and unforgivingsociety where men exercise great control over women, the Church wieldssuch an influence that it can ban individuals that do notconfo... ...pressures have upon a society.---------------------------------------------------------------------i Lorca, Federico.
